1)Intro to Fishing

Fishing is a skill where you catch raw fish. You can use the fish in two ways: Cook it or Sell it. Because every fish you catch, is raw and to cook a raw fish, you need the cooking skill. But of course fishing is still quite useful even if you don't like to cook. You can sell the raw fish in the open market too. Recommended places are: Edgeville, Varrock and other places near the wilderness. If you need Information about cooking raw fish, please take a look at the Cooking Guide.
Fishing may begin slow, but don't let that lead you to the thought that fishing may suck. Fishing is currently one of the best moneymaking skills in RuneScape. The required tools to fish depend on the fish you want to catch. Like many other skills, members have advantages. One of them is, that they have the possibility to catch the best fish.

2)Fishing Tools and their Locations

There are altogether 7 fishing tools in RuneScape: Only the Big Fishing Net and Trawler Net are member's only. There are several locations to buy these tools and I will list them here: Port Sarim, Shilo Village, Catherby, Fishing Guild, Miscellenia. The Trawler Net is not purchasable in any of the listed places, but it's purchasable in Port Khazard. Though the Big Fishing Net is purchasable in any place I listed, except Port Sarim.

Karambwanji and Karambwan are both used in the Twai Bwo Wannai Trio Quest.
Lava Eel is only needed for the members only quest The Hero's Guild.
Monkfish is used in the Swan Song Quest.
To fish both Sea Turtle and Manta Ray you need to go to Port Khazard to begin the Trawler Mini Game. To make it short, in the Trawler Mini Game you go to the open sea with a boat and have to throw out a net. But be aware that your ship might sink and to save your ship, you need to repair it during the boat trip. The tools you need to save your ship are: Swamp Paste, Rope and Bailing Bucket. Everything is purchasable in Port Khazard.

4)Random Events

There are 3 specialised random events for fishing.
NameEffectSolution
River TrollYou click to fish and suddenly a River Troll will appear and will start to attack you. Like all other Random Event Monsters, its level varies from yours.Just run away and wait a bit, until it vanishes or go and fight it, though fighting isn't recommended, because it drops mostly junk and gives no experience.
Big FishA Fish appears on your fishing spot takes your fishing tool away and spits it somewhere out (somewhere near you)Just go and get your fishing tool from the ground.
WhirlpoolA Whirlpool appears on your fishing spot and will take your fishing tool away. There is no way to get your fishing tool back. But at higher fishing levels that won't happen anymore. (70+)

5)Helping Tips

Now if you have no idea how to start fishing I'll help you out a bit.

5a)Free players

Level 1-10

Just start catching shrimps in Draynor Village until you get to fishing level 10. Cook the shrimps if you want to train your cooking skill as well.

Level 10-25

When you got to level 10 you should start baiting fishing Draynor Village and cook/sell the fish until you get to fishing level 25.

Level 25-50

Now comes maybe the most boring part of fishing. You have to fly-fish until you get to fishing level 50 or higher, because fishing lobsters/tunas at low level could be even more boring. So grab your fly-fishing rod/feathers and start fly-fishing in Draynor, if you want to bank/cook the fish or in Lumbridge if you just want to sell the fish at the General Store.

Level 50-99

Lobsters. Nothing more to say. Lobster is THE fish if you want to train your fishing skill. Karamja is the only place you can train it. I'd recommend taking an axe and a tinderbox with you, if you trained your cooking skill along the way to fishing level 50.

5b)Members

Level 1-10

Just start catching shrimps in Catherby until you get to fishing level 10. Cook the shrimps if you want to train your cooking skill as well.

Level 10-25

When you got to level 10 you should start baiting fishing Catherby and cook/sell the fish until you get to fishing level 25.

Level 25-45

Now it's fly-fishing time until fishing level 45. Recommended place for fly-fishing is Shilo Village for the fast banking. But if you don't have access to Shilo Village, then Ardougne River is recommended for cooking/banking the fish and Lumbridge for cooking/selling the fish.

Level 45-55

Big Net fishing highly recommended. Catherby is of course the best place again. For both cooking/banking or cooking/selling the fish.

Level 55-73

Lobsters like the f2p players. Catherby highly recommended. Once you got to level 73, buy a fishing pot and get into the Fishing Guild. You thought Catherby was a good place for fishing? The Fishing Guild is even better!

Level 73-99

Lobster cage your way to level 99 in the Fishing Guild.
